Now we all know that the most time consuming and extensively tedious part of playing Dungeons & Dragons. Hell, I’ve even had people ask me to make their characters for them so that they don’t have to go through the task themselves. I have a fairly decent method of making the process so much easier and fun!
Which Class is Best for You?
There are quite a few basic classes and races that are available in the Player’s Handbook, but there have also been many additions. I’ll be making a point of going through both, since not all of them are available to everybody.
Let’s start with classes. A good way to determine your desired class is to really think about your character’s personality, how you picture them in your mind, and even what you think you would be best at playing. As far as classes go, these are the basic possibilities:
Choosing which one is best is where you will actually have to put in a bit of work. Let’s start with the Barbarian. Barbarians are typically stronger, have higher health, wear decent armor and can carry shields. Most barbarians aim toward using battle axes and great swords! Their primary ability should be strength and are the ones to do all the heavy work in battle.
Bards are a bit more of a fun character, rather than all kicking ass and taking names like the barbarian. The Bard’s primary attribute is Charisma. If you’re a good talker, you might consider this class. Bards are typically most known for their love of music and singing!
Clerics are quite a helpful addition to any party, if you ask me. Their priestly abilities give the, the ability to heal others and so much more. They are a very versatile character, and their main attribute is wisdom.
Druids are definitely a fun character to play, I mean, who wouldn’t want the ability to shift into any animal know to man? Their main attribute is wisdom, like the cleric. If you’re an animal lover, then the Druid is most definitely for you.
Fighters are your typical “D&D” stereotypical characters. With a strong strength or dexterity modifier, you are a master of martial combat, and are proficient in a variety of weapons and armors.
Monks are more of a martial arts wielding type. Your favorite type of combat is usually hand to hand, and you’re amazing at it. The Monks strongest attribute is dexterity or wisdom.
Paladins are somewhat of a “best of both worlds” character as well. Strength and charisma are strong with this one, as you carry the fighting style of a fighter, and the healing properties of a cleric, and are almost always lawful in some way!
Rangers are typically just all around great characters as well. You have the option for ranged combat, stealthy combat, hand-to-hand combat and more. The Rangers strongest attributes are Dexterity and Wisdom.
Rogues are wonderful, really. Don’t expect to play a rogue that comes from a happy background, though. Your dexterity will be impressive, in order to sneak through the shadows without being seen, and to disarm traps and aid your fellow players in behind-the-scenes situations.
Sorcerers are spellcasters who draw their magic from within. As with most spellcasters, your highest attribute will be Charisma.
Warlocks are a bit more fun, as your magic comes from an extraplanar entity. You can come up with some crazy stories as to how you gained your abilities. With strong charisma, you can do so many things.
Wizards are, in my opinion, the strongest spellcasters. They are extremely wise, and are capable of more than most. Wizards are really quite broken if you ask me.
